Virtual Dental Laboratory is a Software package designed to obtain quantitative information on dental treatment through analysis of images obtained using tomographic techniques. The suite VDL is available as a web application, i.e., users can upload their image data and analyses them taking advantage of the power of cloud computing. VDL is able to detect differences between the 3D tooth structure as imaged before and after any treatment.
As an example, the buoyancy of an endodontic treatment can be evaluated through calculation of untreated surface and estimation of the volume of dentin removed, the percentage of treated canal surface treated and changes of radical channel axis in 3D space. The analysis is carried out quantitatively by dividing the root canal into three sections starting from the apex to the crown, or for every millimeter along the axis of the canal. For different treatments is possible to quantify the volume of voids embedded in the tooth structure, e.g., at the interface between a filling restorative material and the native tooth or
the appearance of internal cracks or it is possible to determine other morphological changes in tooth structure caused by tooth preparation or instrumentation.
